A Touch of the Unexpected
There is something particularly delightful about coming upon a touch of whimsy.
Years ago, I wandered into a beautifully appointed shop, with colorful furnishings, striped wallpaper, and elegant architectural details. As I admired the surroundings, something caught my eye. Along the baseboard was a small black silhouette of a mouse hole, complete with a little mouse scurrying nearby. It was such an unexpected discovery, and suddenly the room felt more special. As though it had a secret.
I’ve always loved the idea that elegance and imagination can live happily together. I appreciate the beauty of a space in its own right, but there’s something especially enchanting about discovering a playful detail within it. And while I particularly love that combination, I think a touch of imagination can bring delight to almost any room.
Looking around my own home, I realize I’ve been drawn to these unexpected touches for years, often without consciously thinking about it.
Many years ago, we came across a vintage barrel chair upholstered in the most exuberant pink floral fabric. There was something about the contrast between her graceful, traditional shape and that wonderfully playful pattern that we couldn’t resist. The seller had named her Molly, which only made us love her more. We brought Molly home, and she’s been a part of our lives ever since.
And perhaps it’s no coincidence that I fell in love with a house that has a bit of this personality already. For all its grand proportions and traditional details, it has a wonderfully playful streak. Our living room, with its tall pocket doors and substantial moldings, is rather stately. But above the front window is a band of brightly colored stained glass, original to the house. When daylight comes through, those little panes of pink, blue, green, and orange remind me of rainbow sprinkles. I love the joy they bring to the room.
And then there’s the rabbit.
Our powder room is fairly traditional, with dark cabinetry, marble, and brass fixtures. But turn the corner, and you’re greeted by a portrait of a rather inquisitive-looking bunny. When we first spotted her, we immediately imagined her hanging there. I did briefly wonder whether having a rabbit staring at people in the bathroom was a little strange. But she made me smile, and that seemed reason enough.
There are so many wonderful ways to tuck unexpected delight into a room. An old cabinet that opens to reveal a wash of brilliant color. Delicate butterfly-shaped hardware on a dignified old dresser. Or even a tiny constellation of gold stars painted discreetly on the ceiling, marking a night that holds special meaning for the person who lives beneath it.
That last idea especially captures my imagination. A little secret written overhead, beautiful even to someone who doesn’t know its meaning.
I love the thought that a room might have something unexpected waiting to be discovered. A touch of imagination, humor, or playfulness that makes a home feel uniquely its own.
